[Day 43 VG2020] Quite the busy day on this Vendée Globe: Louis Burton managed to fix most of his problems at Macquarie Island, which Maxime Sorel sailed very close to… Aside from that swift sailing!

We waited a couple of days for a better weather forecast, it looked really wavy and uncomfortable, but onces we start, we are luckly and can enjoy a smooh 180 miles sail towards Rangiora. A few squalls hit us, but we manage it to arrive with perfect timing in front of the west pass of the Rangiroa atoll. The pass entries are always a little bit scary and since it's the second largest atoll of the world, we are super suprised that there is only one other boat when we arrive. We continue our 5 day crossing from Grenada to Curacao. On our 3rd day right at the time when you start to wind down and the sun sets, our furling system breaks (again!). I have to hoist Kieran up the mast while the waves threw the boat all over the place. He put in new grub screws and pieced the furling system back together 7 meters up in the air, safe to say I was a bit on edge. Still dodging pirate waters off the Venezuela cost, we got a scare on the 4th night as a tanker ship suddenly appears on our port side, the Venezuelan side... He looked to be going the same path as us and then suddenly stopped. We were not so cocky at this point. He continued his path after what felt like hours and we had the waters to ourselves again. Despite all this, we have never been more prepared for a longer crossing before, it was the best one yet! Being just us two we finally worked out a good shift schedule and sleeping routine, we felt more ready then ever to take on the big Pacific crossing in the coming months. Join our crew! After almost 3 weeks in Fort Lauderdale, we’re finally ready to sail across to the Bahamas. In this episode, the day after we arrived in St Martin we got a message from Adams childhood friend who is crewing on a mega yacht. He said he'd be arriving into St Martin the very next day and that we were invited to check out his workplace... a 62m (203ft) mega yacht. When we arrived on the day, he told us that to let us aboard we need to have a PCR test done. Our very first. Thankfully we were both free and clear of Covid and spend a morning moving from Philipsburg to Simpson Bay and exploring the yacht. Unfortunately we weren't really allowed to have the name of the yacht in the footage or film the guest area but we had some fun running around filming the outside and being tourists anyway! After catching up with friends for a few days we got back to doing some work. First on our agenda was measuring up for some new sails! We dragged the sails to the beach to measure them up. Next was figuring out how to get to the French side so we could sleep a bit easier (with less rolling) and have more places to sail to. After jumping through various hoops, we got the approval and immediately sailed around to Marigot for a lovely afternoon sail. When the rod head on our forward lower shroud broke on the fifth day of Bill's solo passage headed North from the Bahamas he had to divert course near Beaufort, North Carolina and head inshore. Grace is crewing on our friends boat s/v Delos and we’re ahead of Calico Skies, having begun our passage through the Chesapeake Bay en route for Annapolis. The first thing Bill does upon arriving into Cape Lookout is work on stabilizing the rig. He decides to use a thick piece of dyneema line to temporarily replace the stay. He takes a shackle and lashes the dyneema to the spreader and then on down to the chainplate at deck level. Once he's climbed the mast to jury rig the stay he is on his way to the ICW headed north. Though he doesn't intend to sail, it's important to stabilize the rig - Any motion from waves would be exacerbated by a rig that is moving around and could cause problems. Meanwhile Grace is making her way through the Chesapeake on Delos and arrives into Annapolis where her, Brian & Kazza celebrate their arrival after the long journey. On Calico Skies, Bill motors his way up in calm conditions and then makes record speed through the Chesapeake Bay, reuniting with Grace in Annapolis only days later. Finally we can get back to the good old days of buddy boating!
