We finally arrive in Curacao, the Dutch Caribbean, it feels like we are back in Europe only more colourful and a tiny bit warmer. We put the hook down in a secure inland waterway after our four and a half day crossing from Curacao. The cost gard were on to us though, when we anchored at midnight they came by and questioned us. It's truly amazing to wake up in a new country, exploring a new culture, meeting new people and checking in... We live a pretty cool life, but one of the more difficult and sometimes painful, is the hole process of checking into a new country. And Curacao was no exception. It was the most difficult "checkin" we've ever experience, it took all day. We had to walk from one part of town to the very other side. We have been living on Nandji for 4 years now and we have steadily been upgrading her as we sail around the world. We have always completed upgrades for her safety and sailing performance but we are finally upgrading for our comfort and appearance! We rip out the old carpet that decorated the walls and replace with some fancy carpentry to match the rest of the boat. We want to give her a fresh new modern look whilst keeping the traditional boat feel and not making it look like an ikea kit! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace as we have our first baby on the way to be born overseas! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. We did it! We finally left for on our sailing catamaran adventure to the Bahamas! After 4 days of sailing from Charleston we found ourselves on the Little Bahama Bank with AMAZINGLY clear and still waters. As we finished sailing (okay cruising) into Spanish Cay it was time to get all of our paperwork in order - including getting the results of our PCR COVID test. In this episode Bill is working on some rig upgrades since the mast is down - It had to be removed because a rod head popped when he was solo sailing Calico Skies offshore the east coast of the US, near Beaufort North Carolina. He begins by removing all ten rods which will be sent to the company that made the rod heads three and a half years ago when the rig was replaced around the time we set off to full time cruise. Upon inspection it is determined that two of the ten were formed improperly so those are replaced and we receive a warranty letter for the remaining rods. Meanwhile we’ve decided to replace the furler while the mast is down since it’s not robust enough to handle the ocean miles we’ve done, not to mention the ones we plan to do. As it turns out, we’ve found ourselves with quite a bit of boat work to do in Annapolis, the big one being conversion to Lithium batteries. We hadn’t planned on it but a serendipitous offer came our way via our good friends Brian & Kazza of Delos. They were given new batteries to test out and generously decide to donate their current ones to us. As part of the installation process, Bill replaces the alternator belt because it can wear faster thanks to the higher charge acceptance rate of lithium batteries. He also installs a circuit protector because in the event that the BMS or Battery Management System will not accept charge when one of the parameters it regulates is reached (voltage, temperature and current discharge levels) the alternator could be damaged. Now that we have the Lithium Batteries we couldn't go back to our AGM batteries. They have a thirty percent faster charging rate which means way less time running the noisy generator PLUS we can run heavy duty appliances like the water heater, water maker and hair dryer off the battery bank. And not only is life more pleasant - but now we can live off the grid even longer than ever before. Sono talmente facili e veloci da fare che se avete un forno in barca (o il fornetto) vi verranno benissimo, anche lì, con poco lavoro! Accendere subito il forno a 180 gradi 100 g. burro (morbido a pezzetti) 125 g. zucchero lavorare burro e zucchero (con frusta elettrica meglio, ma anche con una spatola va bene) 2 albumi mescolare un po' i due albumi fra loro unire il tutto e lavorare 125 g. farina 00 o per dolci 1 pizzico di sale 1 bustina di vanillina (o bacca di vaniglia o estratto) Aggiungere il tutto piano piano e lavorare mettere tutto in un sac a poche Fare biscotti ben distanziati su carta forno stropicciata infornare per 12 minuti (10/15) a 180 gradi DONE!!! On réussit finalement à se mettre à l’ancre à la voile après que le moteur s’est éteint entre deux roches… On tente ensuite de comprendre le problème pour finalement continuer notre navigation à la voile sans moteur fonctionnel. On est dans la saison des ouragans et il faut absolument continuer à descendre pour atteindre la République dominicaine avant le pire de la saison cyclonique. On prend donc la décision de faire la traversée Abaco/Eleuthera à la voile. Cette traversée ne s’est pas déroulée comme prévu, le vent très fort a changé un peu de direction, et ne voulait plus nous amener à la destination prévue, nous avons dût faire face à de grosses cellules orageuses qui nous ont donné toute une frousse et nous avons rencontré plusieurs autres problèmes! Wir haben Samsø am späten Nachmittag Richtung Anholt verlassen. Das Wetter war herrlich und Anfangs hatten wir gerade genug Wind zum Segeln. Nicht nur am Schiff gibt es immer mal wieder kleinere technische Probleme - auch die Filmausrüstung will manchmal nicht so wie wir. So hat Nina das Videolog mit unserem Mikrofon mit Windschutz aufgenommen, leider hat das Gerät durch das Grundrauschen des Motors dermaßen übersteuert, dass wir Euch die Aufnahme nicht antun wollen. Wir ware gerader zweieinhalb Stunden zuvor in Ballen auf Samsø abgelegt und zu unserer zweiten Nachtfahrt nach Anholt aufgebrochen. Der Pinnenpilot war schon angeschlagen wie wir es gerne für eine Nachtfahrt tun. So ist die Crew entspannter und kann sich aufs Ausguck gehen konzentrieren. Jessi und ich waren zu dem Zeitpunkt in der Koje und etwas später sollte es dann überbackene Nachos aus dem Omnia geben bevor Jessi und ich unsere erste Wache antreten. Nach diesem Abend-Snack geht es dann für Nina und Jan in die Kojen. Das Wetter war herrlich, leider ist uns etwas der Wind eingeschlafen, so dass wir unter Motor fahren mussten - daher dann auch die Akuten Probleme mit der Aufnahme des Video-Logs. Es waren gerade mal zwei Knoten Wind, das Groß blieb allerdings stehen und so motorsegelten wir Richtung Norden in die Nacht. Anfangs war es besser, wir hatten gute 5 Knoten Wind und machten unter Segeln 3 Knoten Fahrt. Jetzt ist es kurz vor Sonnenuntergang und so langsam Zeit die Navigationslichter an zu machen. Wir hatten einen wunderschönen Tag auf Samsø. Wir haben es ruhig angehen lassen, haben keinen Wecker gestellt und ausgeschlafen. Danach ein gemütliches Frühstück und gegen halb 10 Uhr sind wir dann in Ballen tanken gefahren. Die Bootstankstelle ist dort nur bis um 10 Uhr besetzt. Danach haben wir längs am Steg gegenüber festgemacht und haben noch einen Spaziergang über die Insel gemacht. Eigentlich war ja Regen angesagt aber die Sonne schien und es ist wider Erwarten ziemlich warm geworden, so dass wir uns noch ein bisschen an den Strand gelegt haben und schwimmen gegangen sind, bevor es dann am Nachmittag wieder los ging. Natürlich haben alle vergessen sich noch mal richtig einzucremen und so haben wir uns alle einen ganz leichten Sonnenbrand geholt - so ist das Leben!
