For any sailor, catastrophic hull failure is bad enough. But when you're in the middle of the ocean in rough seas—sailing alone—with no help around for miles....It's life or death. On December 1st, 24 days into the 2020 Vendée Globe around-the-world race, Kevin Escoffier's 2009 IMOCA 60 was sailing along in strong winds and big seas 840 nautical miles SW of Cape Town when suddenly.... "The boat folded up on a wave at 27 knots. I heard a bang, but to be honest, I didn’t need to hear that to know what had happened. I looked at the bow. It was at 90°. In a few seconds, there was water everywhere. The stern was under water and the bow was pointing up to the sky. The boat split in half in front of the mast bulkhead. It was as if she folded up. I promise. I’m not exaggerating. There was an angle of 90° between the stern and the bow.” Kevin had only moments to act. His first move was to send a message to his team: "I’m sinking… I’m not joking. MAYDAY." Then he was alone in a survival suit in the middle of the ocean. The yacht, PRB? Sunken. "Like a shipwreck," Kevin said. Recently, we continued our ongoing conversation with Hubert Lemonnier, a part of the race management team that is essential to keeping the competitors as safe as can be managed from shore. In this episode Barrett and I escape to Painted Gorge. This is really a fun place to ride and camp. And, there are plenty of fun spots to pull away and camp to escape the everyday life. Painted Gorge is pretty easy to find, and access is easy from the Ocotillo, CA exit. Just follow the frontage road to the north of the 8 and then head east. You will soon get to Painted Gorge Road, where you will turn North. The land opens up past the small town. As you will see, some areas (the mountain trail) is closed January 1 - June 30, for the bighorn sheep lambing season. But, there are still plenty of other areas and hills to ride if you go out during this time of year. You just won’t have access to the high trails. PLEASE, if you go out here, please leave room and bring a few extra trash bags to haul out some of the trash which has sadly been left behind. This place is rad, but soon to be destroyed by people’s laziness and disrespect, unfortunately. In this episode we take a 280 Nm shortcut through the Kiel canal from the Baltic Sea to the North Sea instead of going around Jutland. We visit Rendsburg and when we arrive in Brunsbuttle we see Vegesack and old sailing ship that a long time ago belonged to Anders dads grandfathers brother. This is the last episode in 2020 see you in 2021 Happy new year! We are a middle aged couple that has left our hectic business lives to go sailing with our boat Fridá af Wisby and our cat Litza. The sailing in our home water the Baltic Sea is part of our preparation to sail to the Mediterranean Sea. Anders has been at the sea most of his life and sailed for the Swedish national dingy sailing team as a young man. Gitte has also grown up with boat and spent every summer sailing with her father as a teenager but made a pause of about 15 years without sailing as an adult, had just begun to pick-up the interest before she meet Anders a 4 years ago. Onboard we also have our cat Litza a 3 year old Devon Rex we call her the cattain because cats always decide over their humans. Litza is a Devon Rex cat and she is the real cattain aboard. Fridá af Wisby is a Wauquiez 47 pilot saloon that we Gitte and Anders bought in UK in 2019 and that we have sailed to Gotland and in season 1 2020 we sail in the Baltic Sea.

Winter is coming but we found some amazing days of sailing on Long Island after we trailered the Corsair 880 down from Newport, on the ferry, and launched at a local ramp.
