As what remains of the Vendée fleet heads into the Atlantic, there are mixed emotions from the sailors, many of whom are managing damage to their boats.

Diane spoke with Richard Woods, a long time catamaran designer. In Richard designed the catamaran that Diane circumnavigated on with her family, a Woods 40 Meander. Richard has been designing for a very long time all the way back to Derek Kelsall and James Wharram. He has designed more boats than he can recalled mostly in the 8 to 40 foot range. Early birds on deck for a beautiful and sunny sail along the Charleston Battery, Waterfront Park, and the Customs House near the downtown bustling market. The Pineapple fountain was flowing as people walked along the harbor waterfront. Such history here in Charleston that goes back centuries, just amazing to see the church steeples rise above the city and feel the cool January breeze on our faces. Great sail and awesome crew with the whole family including a sweet tailwaggin' sailing Labradoodle! Looking forward to sailing with Cadence again!

The best thing to do is rip it out and start again! Things always get worse before they get better and bashing in this rotted wood and removing the fibreglass was a dirty job, lucky Bonita never saw me do it! Replacing the old with fresh wood and fibreglassing it in, I decorated the inside with the strip planks to match the rest of the boat and when we paint it all next week, it will look amazing. With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace as we have our first baby on the way to be born overseas! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! The Galapagos can be expensive for cruisers to visit, and many of our normal freedoms are taken away. But on Isabella those rules are more relaxed, the town less developed, and the anchorage was more protected.
