EP 156: Wild Sailing Into a GHOST TOWN! Embarking on our 720nm journey from Cape Town, South Africa to Walvis Bay, Namibia. We experiences some gnarly swell... what was a predicted 3m swell became a 4-4.5m swell. After not sleeping for 26 hours and knowing that the swell was just going to get worse with time and unsure if we could outrun it we opted to head into Luderitz. To our suprise.. we were allowed to check in (we didn't think we would be able to but we were the first sailing vessel that they had allowed) After checking into Namibia we decided to get exploring. We had a celebratory welcome to Namibia dinner with some lobster and then headed over to the ghost town of Kolmanskop. See ya next week!! Our sailing lessons continue in this video with two more days of learning (Man Overboard recovery, anchoring and retrieval, weather) and a lot of practical stuff like provisioning, making a ditch bag, fastening our jack lines, and charting our plan. We really started to turn our sights on the trip north to Antigua. It was exciting and simultaneously terrifying. This was what we have been training for, this is what we want, but it was still terrifying not knowing what we will encounter along the way. We celebrated many victories along the way like successful docking on the cement beast, getting a 4th negative covid test, clearing out of St. Lucia without a hitch, doing 4 loads of laundry in a small bucket, and taking in our last sunset from the top of our boat, our favorite place. Our hope is that through these sailing lesson videos, you will understand the incredible challenges that sailing presents. Bit of a long video this one, but so many waterfalls in a day and such beautiful places it was hard to cut down. After arriving at Cairns and saying goodbye to Michael and Mignonne, we get a hire car and drive north to Port Douglas and visit Mossmann Gorge. The following morning we head off around the Atherton Tableands Waterfall Loop. We visit Cathedral Fig Tree, Lake Barrine Teahouse, Curtain Fig Tree, Malanda Falls, Millaa Millaa Waterfall, Zillie Falls, Ellinjaa Falls, Tchupala Falls and Wallicher Falls.

Atlantic Cruising Yachts President, Chris Bent, discusses one of the most critical aspects of buying a boat: the commissioning process. "Commissioning is probably the most critical aspect of buying a boat. It’s the difference between having a great experience as an owner and a not-so-good experience. It’s a process that really begins from the time of deciding what boat you want to buy, to working with our team to determine where you’re going to use the boat, what kind of cruising you like to do.. Are you going to be out there on the anchor a lot cruising in remote parts of the world? Are you going to be doing a charter business in the Caribbean? Are you going to be going up and down the East Coast? There are really so many different ways to use a boat and helping us understand how you want to use your boat so we can guide you to choosing the right options and equipment. But aside from that, it’s really the process of taking a product from the factory - they have the options installed, they’re sitting on jack stands in the yard there in Aigrefeuille or in La Rochelle… A lot of work has to be done - systems have to be checked, put together, assembled. We’ve evolved a lot over the years. We’ve been doing this a long time, we’ve learned a lot about the boats, we’ve collaborated well with the manufacturers, and learned really how to deliver a great product."

Atlantic Cruising Yachts Commissioning Director, Ken Krasko, uses his industry experience to share popular add-ons he recommends for customers based on their short and long-term goals. "A few things that we do to the boats to get them ready for that 5-year plan or the advance - what they might be doing with that boat down the road... Several good examples would be a washer and dryer... They’re not going to need it short term because they’re going to be mostly coastal but when they take off the island it’s a great feature to have when you’re at a beautiful destination, you don’t want to go in and sit in the laundry mat all day. So that’s one of our most popular. Satellite communications is another popular add on. So we’ll run the coax and the control wires and everything through the boat ahead of time so that when they get to the point where they’re ready to cast off, they can get a good sat communications system or even a sat tv system. Another great option is a dive compressor - we find that our customers, part of their dream is to get their certification, go diving, and just really enjoy what’s below the surface of the water. So, dive compressor pre-wiring and pre-plumbing is another great way to go. We do that on many boats."
