Jump onboard Antoine Carpentier’s Class40 Redman at the start of the 7th edition of the RORC Transatlantic Race. In the Class40 duel, Redman got away well at the Committee Boat end and was a mile ahead of Olivier Magre’s Class40 Palanad 3, passing Punta de Papagayo. However, Palanad 3 has taken a more northerly route and is posting a higher boat speed than their immediate competition. What is more, over the next 100 miles or so, Redman will need to point higher than Palanad 3 to pass north of Tenerife. This video includes a general tour of the Nordhavn 57 Storm Haven and a trip overview from this 8 hour - 72 mile run between San Diego and Ensenada. Jeff Merrill has tried to capture some of what happens underway and explain some of the equipment used in the pilothouse and the engine room. You will recognize the Nordhavn 57 Storm Haven if you have seen our video series “The Physics of Docking”. We filmed the Physics series at Pier 32 Marina in National City, CA and that is where this short delivery trip originated. This is a wonderful marina to visit and a great place to call home. Don and Paulie Grover, the owners of Storm Haven, invited Jeff to crew with them on this short hop offshore between San Diego and Mexico. We arrived the afternoon before departure, had a nice dinner and early to bed for a pre-dawn departure. The Grover’s purchased Storm Haven through JMYS several years ago and have enjoyed many miles of cruising. This was the first time Jeff had been back since the video series, but he felt right at home and always has a great time with Don and Paulie who are so generous and hospitable. The wake-up alarms sounded around 4am. This veteran cruising couple had done much of the pre-departure preparation the night before. There is still a lot to make ready and test before disconnecting shore power and freeing the lines. Much of this footage was filmed in night mode, which gives you a feel for the instrument displays and relative ease of moving about this well-organized trawler. The use of head sets between skipper and crew makes communication friendly. With the crew ready (coffee achievers) and the engine warmed up, Don eased back out of the slip in darkness then slowly guides us through the channel out into deeper water. We drove past the new car arrival yard and huge Navy warships, then crossed under the Coronado bridge and marveled at the beautiful San Diego skyline. We also witnessed a huge inbound car carrier headed to the same area we had just left. Our initial visibility was reduced with the darkness and fog. Jeff was very impressed with the new navigation and communication electronics that have been added to Storm Haven since the last time he was aboard. Exiting the San Diego Bay by Point Loma we witnessed several fishing vessels returning. It seems like it is always busy at a major intersection like this. The sun rose as we headed south. Once we were in the Pacific, we had our own little area of the ocean all to ourselves, fortunately interrupted on a few occasions by porpoise playfully swimming in front of the bow. The wind was minimal, and the sea was glassy - ideal conditions contributing to a smooth run. A boring delivery trip is what you hope for, unexciting, with everything working as designed and no surprises. We had a little bit of food to eat, some fun conversations about past boating experiences, continual VHF interruptions and the time flew by. It is wonderful to be a “fly on the wall” and observe some veteran cruisers operate their trawler with their typical calm demeanor and practiced skills. Don and Paulie have become great friends of Jeff. They are very low-profile cruisers, preferring to do what they enjoy and keep their accomplishments at sea level. Unassuming, with a hard-working farm family background they are at ease with diesel engines and familiar with keeping the machinery in great working order for reliability. Storm Haven is beautiful inside and out! By early afternoon we attached our dock lines and fenders in anticipation of our safe arrival to our slip in Ensenada. The Hotel Coral and Marina is a wonderful resort, very popular with cruisers and the helpful crew met us at the dock to catch our lines. Once we had Storm Haven secured and settled, we walked up to the Marina Office to clean in and then, after a wonderful Sunday brunch at the marina restaurant, we retired back to the boat to enjoy the rest of the day. At the end of this video, we have a short debrief with Jeff, Don and Paulie reviewing trip details. If you would like a copy of the day log used aboard Storm Haven, please send an email to Jeff@JMYS.com and in the subject line type “Daily Log” and we will email you a copy. There is always something to learn every time you leave the dock. Hopefully you will pick up a few tips and ideas you can use. Thanks for watching. A big THANK YOU to Don and Paulie Grover (and Bootsie the cat) for inviting Jeff to crew (and allowing him to film //:0). #JMYS, #OffshoreUnderway, #Nordhavn57, #Trawlers Jeff Merrill | mobile +1 949.355.4950 (call or text) | email: Jeff@JMYS.com Please subscribe to our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/JeffMerrillYachts?sub_confirmation=1 Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jeffmerrillyachtsales/?fref=nf Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/merrillyachts Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jmystrawlers/

Selten in Kroatien. When I was in high school, my late elder brother must have joined a sailing club. All he could talked about was how much fun it was to sail. He often told me "I will take you sailing someday". Unfortunately, we never found the time. Wished we could have gone sailing together. I always knew that my time on this boat will be temporary. But alas, circumstances dictates that I have to bid farewell earlier than I wanted it to be. I dedicate this episode to the memory of my elder brother and named this boat "NASIR 1" in his honor. Go easy on me. This is my first vlog ever! I have already done the second part of this and am working on the edits. This one kind of messy for the display part but the information is still sound and good. We have been wanting to get back into Thailand for over 9 months now to get to our sailing catamaran in Phuket. Thailand started opening its borders to tourism in October 2020 with the Special Tourist Visa (STV) program. This is our beginning adventure of going through that program and the Alternative State Quarantine (ASQ) Hotel program. Please ask any questions you have about traveling to Thailand now. If I don't know the answer I will do my best to find a resource for you. Links I referenced in video: Transferwise: https://transferwise.prf.hn/l/Kzy5yQx New Thailand Visa/COE site: https://coethailand.mfa.go.th/regis/step?language=en Ongoing references I have found. I will continually update this list, so check back often. Check out Richard Barrow in Thailand on Twitter and Facebook for up to date Thailand news from an Expat. This probably the single best resource for up to date Thailand news.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has declared a new state of emergency on Jan. 8 for Tokyo and 3 surrounding prefectures. It is the 2nd state of emergency in the country since the global pandemic broke out. Suga requested restaurants, Karaoke bars, gyms and other retail establishments to shorten their business hours.
It won’t be too long before Snow Gum is in the real Arctic, but for the moment we’ll have to enjoy the ice we get here in Cherbourg. It was a clear, cold night and there’s frost on the coachroof and on the piers. Be careful walking out there! We had ice on the Lewmar hatches on the inside of the boat and we’ll be wiping the droplets of water as it melts. It’s all part of the adventure. An excellent feature of these Garcia Exploration yachts is the fan forced ventilation system. There are seven extractor fan intakes, working through three fans, sucking moist air out of the boat after sleeping overnight, or while cooking or showering. It’s an excellent feature for a yacht that will journey to cold places. We have the new Scheiber bus control power system in the boat, so if we want we can switch the fans on or off from the nav station. All the other systems too. Very handy. While I was showing the Webasto heater outlet near the pilot berth, the noise heard was coming from a small electric fan heater we also had running at the top of the stairs. The Webasto fans themselves are very quiet, much quieter than the electric fan. I highly recommend the optional hydronic version of the Webasto heater. It costs a bit, but I think it’s worth it. We actually haven’t been running it all that much but it’s brilliant on mornings like this. Let me know if there’s other systems or features you’d like to see, before I get to them in due course. Edit - copied here from a comment: Note that the particular extractor fan you can hear in this video is making more noise than it should. New fans do that sometimes. Garcia’s manager visited us in the marina a few days ago and he heard the fan. We were pleasantly surprised when a Garcia team member brought a replacement fan around to us that afternoon. It’s easy to swap over; I insisted that I would do it myself and check that my tools are working in the process. Easy boat jobs are fun to do. Regards, Rick.

Boris is in race mode again and very concentrated so that is why he is not sending as many videos as we are used to.
Boris has been gaining miles on his competitors quickly and seems to have found a new mode. Looking ahead the re-establishment of the St Helena high still looks like it will slow the leaders down and allow Boris to keep gaining miles.
