13 hours? No problem, quick 3 hour sail? Oh was that an experience! We had a very pleasant 13 hour sail crossing the Great Bahama Bank from North Bimini, Bahamas to Chub Cay, Berry Islands, Bahamas. What we thought was going to be a short quick 3 hour sail from Chub Cay to New Providence ended up being our most challenging sail yet! From wind, 6-8' waves, squalls and reefing, we had loosened rigging and a snapped jib sheet to deal with. This tested our abilities to think and act quickly while on the water and at the end of the day, we were rewarded with reeling in some dinner as we approached the anchorage! As the UK went into full lockdown we were battling to get back to Venice and our boat Fair Isle. Three covid tests within 48 hours and lots of questions from immigration officials and we made it! Our boats standing rigging is attached by through bolts of the ull and attached to thick stainless chain plates. These chainplates need to be removed so I can finish the wood interior. What a better time to do a rig inspection as we have never removed these bolts! Bonita gets in on the action too, even though she is 7 months pregnant, it is hard to keep that woman down! After all these years of sailing and fixing up Nandji as we go, we have nearly changed or replaced everything on Nandji, but yet Bonita still asks the question. Do you know what your doing??? With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace as we have our first baby on the way to be born overseas! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! We get to work on the Viking, replacing the forward hatch - only to find it is full of rot and the deck will need to be removed to properly fix it. In between working on the tent at Kentmorr, we also need to pay a little attention to the Viking 35, to start cleaning up some of the areas and get it ready for us to live in. Project #1 is to fix the leaking forward hatch so we don't have more water coming through it. Once we get it up though, we realize it needs more than just a re-bed - the balsa core surrounding the hatch is completely rotten and will need to come up and be replaced. But, that will probably be a project for spring. When weather turns extremely windy over the weekend, Matt wants to find out how our friend Andy's 55 ft catamaran handles the situation. A couple of the boys step on Avalon for a day on the Chesapeake with winds in the upper 30's, just to see how it compares to rides on our monohulls. We hope you enjoy! Much love from Annapolis!
