This video is another in a series of my video cataloging all of the wrecked and sunken boats at the Pebbly Beach Dive site in Avalon CA. Catalina Island. Pebbly Beach is a not so commonly known dive site on the South Side of Avalon. it is a wild site meaning there are no facilities, but it is worth the effort to go there. there is a nice shallow kelp forest and a lot of artificial structure along the sandy flats of the site that is habitat to an abundance of sea life. Pebbly Beach is the only shore diving site in Avalon where spearfishing and underwater hunting / collecting is legal.

This video is part of a video catalogue of the sunken wrecked boats that rest in the area of Pebbly Beach, Avalon California - Catalina Island. There are many wrecks at this dive site, and I am numbering them in the order that I found them, this one is #8. Pebbly Beach is one of 2 shore diving sites that can be accessed from the city of Avalon. This is a "wild" diving site, meaning there are no facilities or dive shop but there are a couple of relatively easy entry points to explore the shallow rocky reefs and kelp forest and deeper areas where many wrecks can be found to provide habitat for abundance of sea life. Pebbly Beach is outside of the marine preserve so hunting, collecting and fishing / spearfishing is permitted.

Catalina Island has been invaded by millions and millions of Jack Mackerel. Here is a sample of what we have been seeing in the Avalon Dive Park (Casino Point). Topside there are herds of Sea Lions, huge pods of dolphins, flocks of Pelicans and seagulls feasting on these little delicacies. Watching the schools of bait fish move through the kelp forest, changing shape and circling around is mesmerizing to watch. Relax and enjoy. My Favorite piece of wreckage in the Avalon / Casino Point Dive Park is the old Swim Platform as it was named in earlier maps. It is heavily encrusted with tons of life. One of my favorite fish that I find there are the Juvenile Sheepshead or what I like to refer to as Catalina Clownfish. Wreck Number 1 is the first wreck that I discovered when I started investigating this relatively unknown and under appreciated dive sit on Catalina Island. I came across wreck 1 while I was spearfishing in the shallow kelp forest. the wreck is 20 to 25 feet deep and is on the rocky reef very close to shore. it appears to be part of one of the hulls of a catamaran type boat. there is not much else left of the wreck. Naturally I LOVE the Avalon / Casino Point Dive Park. But the dive park is a marine preserve and a no take zone. The site is littered with sunken boats that create artificial reef and sea life habitat. Pebbly beach Is also a legal fishing area and there are loads of fish. I refer to it as the Pebbly Beach Seafood Buffet. Almost everyone who comes to Avalon to Scuba dive go to the Casino Point Dive park. I would like to introduce you to a good alternative, Pebbly Beach. the 2 best reasons to dive Pebbly: first it is the wrecks, they are plentiful, and second, it is a legal sportfishing area so hunting, collecting and spearfishing is legal and it is good. I call it the Pebbly Beach Seafood Buffet. Laurie and I took a night dive excursion in Hawaii to see the manta rays. There was a building swell that day and there was a lot of surge in the water so the visibility was not that great. We had a great time watching a manta feeding for about 30 minutes with a lot of close encounters. This short video contains some of the highlights.
