In this episode, we're tackling a few big jobs below the waterline. We start with sanding and repainting the bottom of our 78' aluminum trawler, Tangaroa-an essential part of maintenance when you live aboard. But things quickly escalate when we discover bubbling paint on the bootstripe. Turns out, we didn't prep it properly last time. Blaine has to grind off the entire stripe and redo it from scratch. Just when we think we've seen it all, we spot a troubling diesel leak coming from a weld seam in one of our fuel tanks. That means welding-on an active diesel tank. What could go wrong? We walk through how we assess the risk, what precautions we take, and how we pull off the repair safely. If you're interested in aluminum hull maintenance, DIY boat repairs, or what it really takes to refit a liveaboard yacht, this video is for you. We don't gloss over the messy stuff-and this episode has plenty of it. Join us as we prep Tangaroa for her next big run. #BoatRefit #AluminumBoat #DieselEngines ? We're answering your questions about our custom marine cooling system for the Cummins 6.7 engines we installed in our 78' aluminum trawler, Tangaroa. From engine cooling circuits to seawater wear, this Q&A dives into the gritty details behind what it takes to adapt truck engines for marine duty. In this episode, Blaine tackles real viewer questions: Do we need a charge air cooler circuit? Can we still remove the starter with everything installed? Are we worried about seawater ruining our eBay heat exchangers? And yes-someone asked if we're finally getting a new welder. If you're into boat refits, DIY marine upgrades, or diesel engine swaps, this one's for you. We built this repower ourselves-every bracket, pipe, and elbow-so nothing is off-the-shelf. If you're planning your own marine engine swap or just love learning how things work, stick around. There's even a question of the week that made Blaine stop and rethink a few things. In this episode, we tackle the critical task of fabricating and installing the cooling system for our newly mounted Cummins 6.7 marine engines aboard our 78-foot aluminum trawler, Tangaroa. With the Detroits gone, it was time to make sure these truck engines could handle marine duty-and cooling is key. We sourced aftermarket heat exchangers off eBay and got to work. Blaine had to custom-fabricate engine brackets, thermostat elbows, and support poles for the coolant tanks to make everything fit and function properly. This wasn't a bolt-on job. From pipe bending to bracket welding, nearly every piece had to be designed from scratch. If you're curious how we transitioned from old-school dry stack Detroit Diesels to modern Cummins diesels with a fully custom marine cooling system, this episode has you covered. We're documenting every step of this boat repower to help other boaters and DIYers who might be planning their own engine swaps or upgrades. Whether you're into Cummins swaps, Detroit Diesel nostalgia, or just love watching real-world boat projects unfold-this is the stuff we live for. #CumminsMarine #BoatRefit #MarineCoolingSystem ? In this episode of Your Questions Answered, we're tackling some of the top questions you had about our latest project-building a custom hybrid exhaust system for our 78' aluminum trawler, Tangaroa. You asked how we cut the holes in the boat, how we connected stainless to aluminum, why we went with such a large exhaust pipe, and whether we're worried about galvanic corrosion. Blaine also shares his thoughts on how much asbestos is still on board (yep, it's an old boat), and we dig into the big question of how long we think Tangaroa will keep cruising. This video is packed with practical info for anyone repowering a boat, working with Cummins marine engines, or dealing with tricky exhaust design challenges. Whether you're wrenching on your own boat or just curious how we're turning two Cummins 6.7L truck engines into a reliable marine setup, you'll get the behind-the-scenes details here. We've had enough of the soot, smell, and smoke. In this episode, we rip out our old dry stack exhaust system and start fresh-because let's face it, the exhaust setup that worked for our Detroit Diesel 12V71s just wasn't going to cut it for the new Cummins 6.7s. Blaine spent months designing a new solution that would work with our repower, be easier to maintain, and not leave our deck (or our feet) covered in black soot. The result? A custom-built, hybrid water-cooled exhaust. It's not fully dry, not fully wet-just the right blend to keep things running smooth and clean without sacrificing performance. If you're repowering a boat, upgrading your marine exhaust, or just curious how to deal with exhaust on a liveaboard, this video dives deep into the design and fabrication process. We show you what we built, why we built it, and how it fits into our engine room setup aboard our 78' aluminum trawler. Whether you're a diesel guy, a boat builder, or just like watching a good DIY project come together, this one's worth your time. #Cummins #BoatRefit #MarineExhaust ? In this episode of Your Questions Answered, we're tackling the most common-and most thought-provoking-comments from our video We Ripped Out the Fuel System-Then Built Our Own. After tearing out decades-old diesel plumbing, we rebuilt Tangaroa's entire fuel system from scratch, and you had a lot to ask. How big are our day tanks? Are we really confident in push-on fittings? What are we doing to avoid diesel bug, and why didn't we just design brand-new fuel tanks while we were at it? We get into all of it-and more. Blaine even got stumped by the question of the day and is off to rethink a few things. If you're into DIY marine fuel systems, Cummins engine repowers, or just love watching a couple fix up their liveaboard yacht piece by piece, you'll get something out of this one. Thanks for being part of the crew-your questions keep us thinking (and sometimes second-guessing), and we wouldn't have it any other way. ? In this episode, we tear out the entire fuel system from our 78' aluminum trawler as part of our massive Cummins 6.7 marine repower. What started as an engine swap has grown into a full-on systems overhaul-including custom fuel lines, filters, transfer pumps, and return systems. After removing our two Detroit Diesel 12V71s, we realized it didn't make sense to keep the old fuel setup. So Blaine got to work designing a new marine fuel system from scratch-tailored specifically for the Cummins engines and our unique liveaboard needs. We'll walk you through the old system's removal, what didn't work anymore, and what we're building to replace it. From marine-grade hose routing to mounting new filters and transfer components, this is a deep dive into boat fuel systems, designed with simplicity, access, and reliability in mind. Whether you're upgrading your own diesel engines, planning a refit, or just like watching hands-on marine engineering, this is a key step in the journey. In this video, we answer your questions from our latest episode: From Truck to Boat: Building My Custom Cummins 6.7 Belt Drive. Blaine tackled everything from crankcase breather routing and raw water pump issues to how we mounted a massive bus alternator and dealt with squeaky belts. You had a lot of great questions-and we're digging into the details to give you solid answers. We also talk about why we chose to reuse the Detroit Diesel raw water pumps, how we fabricated custom brackets and pulleys, and what we're doing to manage oil bypass filtration. One comment in particular made Blaine stop and rethink a key part of the setup-so he's already headed back into the engine room with a wrench in hand. If you're passionate about boat refits, diesel engine swaps, or just love seeing clever DIY marine engineering, this one's for you. In this episode of Your Questions Answered, we respond to the top comments from our last video: We Mounted Cummins 6.7s in Detroit 12v71-Sized Holes. That's where we finally installed our newly rebuilt Cummins 6.7L truck engines into our 78-foot aluminum yacht, Tangaroa. But as expected, the questions came rolling in. This week, we're covering everything from why we used two mufflers and chose steel over aluminum for the engine mounts, to how we're planning to secure that massive alternator. Blaine also talks about engine tuning, what kind of control he's building in, and how much the yard stay is really costing us. And yes-some of your comments gave us a good laugh, so we're sharing those too. After more than a year of planning, building, and prep-this is the moment we've been working toward. In this episode, we finally mount our Cummins 6.7 truck engines into the engine room of our 78' aluminum yacht, Tangaroa. But dropping them into holes left behind by two massive Detroit Diesel 12V71s wasn't simple. The Cummins are much smaller, which meant Blaine had to custom design and fabricate brand-new engine mounts that would handle the torque, align with the shafts, and give us a rock-solid setup for the long haul. This isn't your average engine swap. From measuring to welding, fitting to bolting-everything had to be just right. If you've been following our repower series, you know this is a huge step forward. And if you're just joining us, you're jumping in right as the fun begins. Whether you're a diesel enthusiast, a fellow boater, or just someone who enjoys watching big projects come together, you'll want to see this one. #CumminsSwap #DetroitDiesel #BoatRefit ? In this episode of Your Questions Answered, we're following up on our recent video We DESTROYED our Engine Room - Now What?, where we steam cleaned the bilges of our 78' aluminum yacht, Tangaroa. You had questions-and we're here to answer them. From why we're not coating the aluminum bilges, to what kind of wiring we're using if we don't like copper on the boat, to why we skipped the degreasers-Blaine walks you through the thought process and shares what we've learned from years of working on aluminum boats. This series is all about showing the real work behind our DIY repower-from pulling the Detroit Diesel 12V71s to prepping the engine room for a pair of Cummins 6.7s. If you're into engine swaps, aluminum boat maintenance, or just like watching people clean out nasty bilges and solve weird boat problems, you're in the right place. With our twin Detroit Diesel 12V71s finally out of the engine room, it's time to face the aftermath-and it's not pretty. In this episode, we take you below the deck into the bilges of our 78' aluminum yacht Tangaroa, a place that hasn't been accessible since 1969. The space is cavernous, filthy, and coated in decades of oil and grime. Before we can install our new Cummins 6.7s, we've got to clean everything out and start fresh. We fire up the steam cleaner and get to work scrubbing the engine room, checking the condition of the aluminum, and planning what's next. Spoiler: this isn't going to be a plug-and-play repower. With the Cummins being much smaller than the Detroits, we're rebuilding engine mounts, fuel lines, exhaust systems, and more. But it all starts with clean bilges and a solid foundation. If you've ever wanted to see what it really takes to repower a classic aluminum yacht-this is where it begins. #BoatRefit #EngineRoomCleanUp #CumminsSwap ? In this episode of Your Questions Answered, we're following up on our big engine removal video-We Removed TWO 5000 Pound Detroit Diesels From our 78' Yacht. You had plenty of questions, and we're here to break it all down. From how we removed those massive asbestos-covered mufflers to what we did with the Detroits after they were out, we're giving you the behind-the-scenes answers. We also tackle the logistics of moving two 5,000-pound engines across the yard, what surprised us most, and share the viewer question of the week that really made us stop and think. If you're interested in Detroit Diesel engines, yacht engine swaps, or what really happens when you take on a DIY boat repower, this is the episode for you. Blaine walks you through it all and shares what we've learned so far as we prepare to install our new Cummins 6.7s. Thanks to everyone who commented-you're helping guide this project, and we love hearing from you. Got a question about this week's video? Drop it below and we might answer it next Sunday. #DetroitDiesel #BoatRefit #MarineEngines ? It's the end of an era onboard Tangaroa. In this episode, we finally remove both Detroit Diesel 12V71 engines from our 78' aluminum yacht as we move forward with our full engine repower. Each engine weighs over 5,000 pounds-and we tackled the job ourselves. The process wasn't simple. First, we had to remove two massive, asbestos-covered mufflers-one of which was sitting right on top of Stella, blocking the hatch. Once we had the space cleared, we lifted Stella out first, then shifted Portia across the engine room to get her into position for removal. Our DIY gantry system was put to the test, and we weren't sure if everything would fit through the old hatches-but we made it happen. If you're interested in marine engine swaps, Detroit Diesels, or what it really takes to repower a liveaboard yacht, this is the video to watch. #DetroitDiesel #BoatRefit #Cummins ? In this episode of Your Questions Answered, we're responding to the top viewer comments from last Sunday's video, We Need to CUT HOLES to REMOVE 2 DETROIT 12V71s. We're answering your questions about cutting open our 78' aluminum yacht, removing the dry stack exhaust, and building a DIY gantry system to handle two 5,000-pound Detroit Diesel 12V71 engines. Viewers asked about the bondo on the roof, how we handled the steel exhaust pipes, what kind of reinforcement we used for the gantry, and whether we ran into any unexpected challenges with the hatches or structure. Blaine's answering it all-firsthand, from the engine room. This is a must-watch for anyone interested in boat repower projects, Detroit Diesel marine engines, or just learning what it takes to prep a big boat for serious mechanical work. It's all part of our larger mission to repower Tangaroa with twin Cummins 6.7 engines-and we're doing it all ourselves. #DetroitDiesel #BoatRefit #Cummins ?
